Summer 2021

This year, the Science Coding Immersion Program (SCIP) led a 6 week program, in which students take part in team meetings 2 hours a day for 4 days per week along with a 1 hour webinar. Teams met on Zoom and communicated on Slack with their team, other SCIP participants, and the admin team.

SCIP Summer 2021 Goals

Our goal for the Summer 2021 Science Coding Immersion Program (SCIP) was to help participants learn how to code in their own teams and create a community of scientists among undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty/staff in the San Francisco Bay Area colleges as well as students in the UC/CSU system. Participants were in large part within the Biology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry department.

Changes to the Summer Program

6 weeks, 9 hours/week

Last summer, SCIP participants went through an 6-, 7-, or 8-week program, based on availability & preferred language. This year, SCIP was held over the course of 6 weeks to allow time for opportunities like internships & classes. Image Analysis participants took part in an internship with the Center for Cellular Construction (CCC).

3 Offered Languages

Originally, SCIP participants had the choice between R and Python - as it is used in many of the bioinformatics and data science in Biology & Chemistry. This summer, SCIP offered 3 different languages: R, Python, and Image Analysis (ImageJ). Image Analysis participants learned ImageJ to use for their internships with the CCC.

New R Content

We've learned through participant feedback that we need more content related to Biology and (Bio)Chemistry! This year, Ryan Fergusson has created R videos to elaborate on the basics of the R and RStudio. Coding projects made by the SCIP Admin Team were also created to provide examples of coding usages in Biology & Biochemistry-related research.

More Focus on Community

Throughout the pandemic, interacting and networking with other participants was made difficult. To address this, we've provided participants with non-coding prompts to help interact with each other and learn really cool things together! Participants learned about each other's favorite restaurants, pets, and other things!
